Rostov – Over twelve thousand fans were on hand at Olimp-2 Stadium to cheer hosts FC Rostov to victory against PSV Eindhoven in Group D play of UEFA Champions League.
Things started out well for the home side as forward Dmitry Poloz gave Rostov a 1-0 lead after nine minutes. Aleksandr Yerokhin provided a through ball that went behind the PSV defense and Poloz did the rest.
Rostov’s lead only lasted five minutes as midfielder Davy Pröpper scored with a shot from outside the box to level the score at 1-1.
In the 38th minute a header from Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun found Dmitry Poloz and the Russian forward scored his second goal of the match to put Rostov back in the lead as the home supporters erupted in delight.
Once again the lead did not last long as a cross from Colombian defender Santiago Arias was headed in by captain Luuk de Jong in the second minute of stoppage time.
The timing of the goal was terrible as Rostov would not be saved by the bell. PSV carried the momentum as the teams went into the interval tied 2-2.
With four goals scored in the first half, the fans were expecting more in the second half but ironically no goals were scored and Davy Pröpper had his penalty kick saved by Soslan Dzhanayev in the 57th minute after Luuk de Jong had been brought down by Denis Terentyev.
The penalty kick miss by Pröpper turned out to be costly as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
In the other Group D match, Atletico Madrid defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in Spain. Rostov will host Atletico Madrid on 19 October.
