Tehran – A spot in Group A of 2017 AFC Champions League was up for grabs at a packed Azadi Stadium on 7 February between hosts Esteghlal and Al-Sadd. Entering the match it was the Qatari club that was favored with players like Spanish star Xavi, Qatari defender Mohammad Kasola, and Iranian center back Morteza Pouraliganji.
Neither team was able to break the deadlock during one-hundred and twenty minutes of football and it was Esteghlal that prevailed winning 4-3 on penalties. The Iranian club will join Emirati club Al-Ahli, Lokomotiv Tashkent of Uzbekistan, and Al-Taawoun of Saudi Arabia in Group A of 2017 AFC Champions League.
