Football season in Europe is coming to a close very soon due to the approaching Euro 2016 in France. At this time of the year football clubs either face the excitement of possibly winning their respective league while other teams might be fighting to avoid relegation.
How have our Iranian footballers been doing as of lately?
In the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Maritimo were defeated by Benfica at home on 8 May but currently sit in the twelfth position of the table and are safe from relegation. Maritimo will finish the season away from home against Moreirense on 15 May.
The Championship in England wrapped up on 7 May. Charlton Athletic were defeated at home 3-0 to Burnley and have been relegated to League One. Iranian striker Reza Ghoochannejhad has virtually become a ghost at Charlton and the time is right for him to seek out a new club for next season.
In Bundesliga 2, Ehsan Hajsafi and FSV Frankfurt are in trouble. FSV have not won a match since 19 February against St. Pauli, they are winless in their last eleven matches and to top it off, they are on a six game losing streak.
FSV will close out their season at home against 1860 Munchen but even a win by FSV will not guarantee avoiding relegation. Currently, FSV have twenty-nine points and occupy the second to last relagation spot. The best FSV Frankfurt can hope for is to win and hope that Duisburg does not win against RasenBallsport Leipzig.
In the Netherlands, the Eredivisie concluded on 8 May. Alireza Jahanbakhsh and AZ Alkmaar concluded their season with a 3-1 road win against FC Utrecht. AZ Alkmaar finished in fourth place with fifty-nine points and have qualified for the 2016-17 Europa League.
In the Eerste Divisie, Almere City defeated FC Emmen 8-2 on aggregate in the first round of the Eredivisie promotion play-offs. Leading the way in goal for Almere is Iranian Agil Etemadi. Next, Almere will face Willem II, the squad that placed sixteenth in the Eredivisie table. Almere City will host Willem in the first leg on 13 May and the return leg will be played three days later.
The Greek Super League finished on 17 April with Olympiacos FC winning their sixth consecutive title. However, in the Greek Super League, teams ranked second through fifth in the table get to play in a home and away round robin tournament.
A UEFA Champions League qualifying round spot is at stake but regardless, if not the Champions League, Karim Ansarifard and Panionios will be playing in Europa League qualifying at worst. Panionios will face Panathinaikos at home on 11 May.
The race to the top in the Russian Premier League is not over yet and will only get more exciting and suspenseful with three match days remaining. Sardar Azmoun and FC Rostov are in second with fifty-four points and trail CSKA Moscow by two points. On 11 May CSKA will face FC Ufa on the road and one day later Rostov will face Dinamo Moscow away from home.
Iranian defender Milad Mohammadi and Terek Grozny currently sit at seventh in the table with forty-one points and will entertain Amkar at home on 12 May.
