Abu Dhabi – Down 2-1 with ten minutes remaining, Persepolis needed help and it came as no surprise that Mehdi Taremi was the man to save the Red Army of Tehran.
Persepolis began with a perfect start when Vahid Amiri finished off a cross from Taremi to put Persepolis up 1-0 after four minutes.
The score remained the same until Ismail Matar and Jorge Valdivia scored to give the Abu Dhabi based club a 2-1 lead. Matar scored two minutes before the hour mark and the Chilean midfielder put Al-Wahda in front six minutes later.
Nine minutes remained when Taremi leaped high to head home a cross that went off the post and into the net to level the score at 2-2.
In the 89th minute a free kick just outside the penalty area taken by Soroush Rafiei went over the Al-Wahda wall and Taremi volleyed the ball beautifully past keeper Rashed Ali to give Persepolis the 3-2 victory.
Persepolis will face Qatari club Al-Rayyan on 14 March in Doha.
In Group C, Zob Ahan was defeated 2-1 by Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli when Syrian striker Omar Al Somah scored the winning goal in the 86th minute.
