Iran’s first ever goal in a World Cup was scored at the 1978 tournament in Argentina against Scotland.

Down 1-0 in the second half due to an own-goal from Andranik Eskandarian, the Iranians fought back and Iraj Danaeifard scored the equalizer at the hour mark and the match finished in a 1-1 draw.

In those days, Scotland was one of the best teams in Europe with players like Graeme Souness, Archie Gemmill, and Kenny Dalglish.

At that time, Souness and Dalglish played for Liverpool and Gemmill was a member of Nottingham Forest.
