Dinamo Zagreb wins thriller in extra time

Wals-Siezenheim – Red Bull Salzburg felt confident going into their return leg against Dinamo Zagreb on 24 August at Red Bull Arena after the 1-1 tie in Zagreb one week earlier.

Midfielder Valentino Lazaro put the Salzburg in the lead when he scored in the 22nd minute. The fans at Red Bull Arena were getting anxious as time ticked away.

The home side led nearly the whole match but we all know that anything can happen in football.

Red Bull Salzburg were merely minutes away from clinching a spot in the Champions League group stage but Chilean forward Junior Fernandes spoiled the party when he equalized in the 87th minute.

The fans at Red Bull Arena were deflated as the match went into extra time.

Playing with momentum, Dinamo Zagreb took the lead five minutes into the first half of extra time through Algerian forward El Arabi Hillel Soudani.

And that is how the match ended, Dinamo Zagreb pulled off a fantastic 2-1 win and will play at the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League.

The Croatian champions have a tough task ahead of them after having been drawn in Group H with Juventus, Sevilla, and Lyon.

Dinamo’s first test will take place away from home against Lyon on 14 September.
